CONTEMPORARY URBAN RETREAT |
|
BEFORE:
This traditional Northeast Portland home had a detached
garage, and an existing flagstone patio surrounded by pea gravel
paths. The patio itself was raised above the ground with a 2x4
edging, and the pieces of stone were too uneven for a table and
chairs, not to mention a tripping hazard.
Existing plantings included an
out-of-control butterfly bush that was pruned often but still got
larger every year.

|

|
 |

A low rock wall at the back of
the yard didn't provide much interest and the plantings were
scattered. |

The long wall of the garage
was sun-baked, and didn't provide any relief to the eyes

AFTER
|
|

New patio of 2'x2'
architectural slabs creates a level, attractive entertaining area.
The rock wall
along the back was rebuilt and made higher, and a tiered fountain
creates a soft sound.
Landscape lighting at night accentuates the trellis and other new
features. |

Trellis and planting area
along garage wall
create interest one year later. Plantings will
grow in and the honeysuckle and clematis vines
will cover the trellis in a few years. |
