FRONT YARD MAKEOVER

BEFORE:

This Beaverton home had a rather stern-looking plain concrete staircase leading to the front door. The sloping yard was loosely retained on the lower side by some narrow boulders laid on end.

Existing plantings included some tired and unhappy David viburnums, a struggling lawn, and some other plantings without much color. An existing birch tree only 8 feet from the house was sending large roots towards the foundation and needed to come out.

The homeowners wanted a warm and welcoming front yard, where they could sit and enjoy their garden and the cul-de-sac neighbors. They also wanted to do much of the work themselves, so I helped them to locate the right materials and plants. They had a professional mason do the brickwork, though, at my suggestion.

Before: Stairs, plain concrete, had uneven treads.

Before: Irregular front boulder wall

AFTER

The existing steps were covered with a brick facing that matched the home's exterior. Also,
the treads were rebuilt so the spacing was even for comfortable stepping.

Bull-nosed brick on top of the wall and on the new steps
has a smooth and professional appearance.

The new brick wall complements
the house and has a more structured
and streamlined feeling than the old boulder
wall did.

The old struggling lawn was replaced with a front courtyard patio of
Autumn Flame flagstone.

 colorful perennials brighten the area.

Client comments:

"We are really glad we worked with you on our design. We got exactly what we wanted, and you were so easy to work with. Thank you again."
