BEFORE:
This Beaverton home had a rather stern-looking plain
concrete staircase leading to the front door. The sloping yard was
loosely retained on the lower side by some narrow boulders laid on
end.
Existing plantings included some
tired and unhappy David viburnums, a struggling lawn, and some other
plantings without much color. An existing birch tree only 8 feet
from the house was sending large roots towards the foundation and
needed to come out.
The homeowners wanted a warm and
welcoming front yard, where they could sit and enjoy their garden
and the cul-de-sac neighbors. They also wanted to do much
of the work themselves, so I helped them to locate the right
materials and plants. They had a professional mason do the brickwork,
though, at my suggestion.
