Contemporary Urban Retreat |
|
BEFORE:
This traditional Northeast Portland home had a detached
garage, and an existing flagstone patio surrounded by pea gravel
paths. The patio itself was raised above the ground with a 2x4
edging, and the pieces of stone were too uneven for a table and
chairs, not to mention a tripping hazard.
Existing plantings included an
out-of-control butterfly bush that was pruned often but still got
larger every year.

Before:
A low rock wall at the back of
the yard was
unimpressive
and the plantings were
scattered. |
Before:
The long wall of the garage
was sun-baked,
and didn't provide any relief to the eyes |

AFTER: |
"Pat--Thanks for all your hard work and great
landscaping ideas + design! The backyard
continues to grow
and looks great." --D.R., Portland

After:
New patio of 2'x2'
architectural slabs creates a level, attractive entertaining area.
The rock wall
along the back was rebuilt and made higher, and a tiered fountain
creates a soft sound.
Landscape lighting at night accentuates the trellis and other new
features. |

Slab paver detail at edge of patio |

Trellis and planting area
along garage wall
create interest one year later. Plantings will
grow in and the honeysuckle and clematis vines will cover the trellis in a few years.
Picture on right shows paver appearance when wet. |
|

Tiered fountain creates a
focal point and provides gentle movement and sound at the edge of the new patio.
